Background:
Just like the Ishbalans, Shifters were seen as a threat and are constantly at war with the state. So when Tana was born into a family of wolf shifters, she was destined to live life in hiding. Her people lived like the nomadic Native Americans, and constantly moved from place to place. They despised alchemy, as it went against their God and their way of life. Though always moving, Tana had a pretty good childhood. She always looked up to her brothers and wanted to be just like them. She followed them everywhere, and has learned more from them, than from her parents. So when her brothers started to learn about alchemy in secret, so did she. “It’s just out of curiosity” they told her, but she couldn’t help think that it was something more. Her brothers told her that shifters had actually practiced alchemy not to long ago. It was only when the state goth involved that they stoped the practice. They told her that it was all because of a blue stone, said to have been created by a shifter. This stone supposedly had equivelant power to the philosophers stone in the way that it could perform a transmutation without a circle. But unlike the philosophers stone it had it’s limitations. It could only perform earth alchemy and instead of actually transmuting something, it would only “shift” it into another form. Therefore not going against their religion at all. Her brothers were determined to create one.
But everything was lost in one night. The military had found out where they had been staying, and sent the state alchemists in to investigate. They destroyed everything, and most everyone was killed, including Tana’s family. Tana was out at the time, she was lost in thought and the nature around her was able to dim her senses, but when she smelled the smoke she immediately went to check it out. Everything was gone. The temporary settlement was burnt to the ground, and the only thing left of her house was a blue stone about the size of her palm. Apparently every family kept one as a reminder of their past, even though it was forbidden to use it or tell any of the children.
It was that night that Tana decided to stop this fighting between the shifters and the state. And with the shifters stone she believed she could. Using the stone, she became a skilled state alchemist, and hid her identity, hoping to gain the trust of the state and one-day reveal herself. By doing so, she hoped to gain peace for her people.

Her Alchemy: Because she doesn’t want others to know she uses the stone, she has drawn a transmutation circle on her right index finger. When she touches it to her forehead, she can perform a transmutation with just her mind earning her the name the Mind Shifting Alchemist. Though this plan has its faults, no one has ever questioned her further.

Other facts:
No one besides her immediate family has ever seen her shift into a wolf more than once.
It is a possibility that her sister may still be alive
Shifters are typically short, explaining why she is only 4’9
Though Tana is depressed at times because of the loss of her family, she does not hate state alchemists. But she does hold a grudge against them and sometimes chooses not to follow orders.
